What information or advice would you give other caregivers?

From Marlina daught of Millie from Our House of West Sandy

I would say if you can get online or go to the library for information, do it. Also, get all the information you can from the assisted living centers that you are looking at. Talk to the people who have been there, or that had a loved one there that can tell you more. They have a different perspective. Talk to a financial planner to work out a plan regarding payments and money issues. People need to know that they are not alone – so many people go through this. You need to find someone who has been through it to lean on for guidance. It is much easier than being alone.

Be their voice. You know them the best. Become familiar with medical history, and know what the facility offers your loved one.

How did you feel about moving your loved one into Our House Assisted Living?

Posted by on May 12, 2010  |  No Comments

From Virginia daughter of Eva from Our House of East Sandy

At one time her mother had been in the hospital. Her husband had a hard time taking care of her, but they refused to move into family home with all the stairs or an assisted living facility. When she moved into Our House Virginia was worried about how she would get along. But overall she began to feel relieved just to know that people would be there in case of emergencies, or knowing that someone would be checking on her all day and night. Her mother ended up having many more visitors in the assisted living center. Her mother had dementia, and had a hard time remembering where she was, why she was there, and when she could go home. Moving her mother into an assisted living facility was the best thing that could have happened for her – a very good experience. She wished she could have moved in years earlier.

If you can get your parents to make that change, they will, in some ways be happier. They are safer and more secure. If there’s a way to get your parents to agree to it it would be a great experience.

From Carolyn daughter of Joe from Our House of West Sandy

I had mixed feelings. I would rather have him with me, but his needs dictated our choices. I don’t like large facilities – the clients become a number, and are left alone too often. We have experienced many facilities (between 8 and 10), and Our House has been the best so far.

From Lynda daughter of Edna from Our House of Central Sandy

Relieved and more secure that she would receive around the clock care.

Just don’t think you can do it all yourself….you are not equipped to do it, even with nursing training like myself because you cannot be available on a 24//7 basis all the time and your lack of sleep and exhaustion will make you a less efficient care giver.
